The Client

For this project, our client is a Magnet School for Sports Leadership and Management. They have a building across from the main campus that has additional classrooms and an outdoor patio area for students to fellowship and spend time outdoors. The architect involved with the school designed a curved canopy to provide weather protection and shade for students, so they would be able to use the space throughout the year.

The Canopy

This canopy has a custom curved shape fabricated and installed for a State of the Art (7) Story School Facility. The canopy covers an outdoor patio area of a special Sports Leadership and Management Charter School. The canopy covers an area that is 58’-0” wide x 34’-0” projection. Ultrashade USP 123 Stoplight Red is the fabric selected for the cover. This canopy, like all Miami Awning Structures, is engineered and built to the Florida Building Code.

The Outcome

The principal, teachers and students were very excited and pleased with their new outdoor canopy area. They enjoy using the outdoor space that is now covered. The students and faculty are all focused on sports related curriculum's and careers and this new area also gives them another space for outdoor activities when needed. They especially appreciate how the canopy keeps them cool and protected from the intense rays of the sun or tropical downpours during the summer and fall seasons. What a great space!

Miami Seaquarium

Custom Beverage Canopy

This design won the IAA 2016 Outstanding Acheivement Award for Canopies<93 Square Meters

This is a custom designed canopy for the Miami Seaquarium. The structural dimensions are 37′-0″ x 10′-0″. The design, is a custom engineered compound arched structure. This canopy is anchored to the existing low structural wall already on site. The fabric was designed as a flat panel for easy removal in the event of a hurricane.

The client desired to have a canopy that would be used to serve beverages and food items for park visitors. They wanted the canopy to be attractive and easy to spot as guests walk from one venue to another.

The structural design of this canopy, follows the pattern of other recent projects that have been recently designed and installed by our company at the park. Engineering determined the size of the framing members used. The entire frame is bowed in both dimensions. Precise bending of all pipes was needed to achieve this custom design. This also meant that everything had to be patterned for the fabric cover. Installation had to be performed as early as possible in the morning and paused around the various show times, to not disturb patrons at the park.

The customer is extremely satisfied with the result. The canopy shelters the refreshment and food vendors below. It is colorful, attractive and blends in well with the other structures that we have installed. Park visitors now have easy access for refreshments in this location of the park, which is especially appreciated by all who are there.

Miami Seaquarium – Penguin Isles Canopy

Custom Design Canopies

Miami Seaquarium was creating a new exhibit for their newest members, African Penguins, at the new Penguin Isle. They wanted a framed fabric structure that would have design appeal and attract the public also providing protection from the hot tropical sun for both the penguins and visitors. This project features a set of custom engineered canopies for the new Penguin Isle exhibit for the Miami Seaquarium. The canopies are designed to provide protection for the new penguin habitat that has a 800 sq. ft. tank with a rocky dry area and an adjoining 9,000 gallon pool. The canopies are covered with Ferrari 502 Lagoon Blue and made with schedule 40 galvanized steel.

The penguins and keepers are extremely pleased and satisfied with the new shade. The canopies make for an attractive exhibit, provide the penguins and visitors with the needed shelter and make an environment that is both educational and stimulating. This really allows guests to enjoy interacting with the penguins. The client is looking forward to recreating this design concept for future canopy projects.

The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne Ballroom Patio

 

The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne - Custom Retractable Canopy

This project features a very special set of large retractable canopies for The Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne. The client has a patio area off of the Grand Ballroom that overlooks the grounds leading to the Atlantic Ocean. It is contracted for outdoor weddings and events and previously needed to have a back-up tent rental in the case of inclement weather. This was always an extra cost and add-on; another thing for event planners to deal with, as well as very cumbersome. These beautiful retractable canopies were designed to replace the rental tents, so that at the touch of the remote, the space can now be transformed with overhead coverage for rain or heat. Drop down screens, also keep out blowing rain, cut down wind and keep out insects.

A custom combination of three B-Space Corradi units were constructed for a combined length of 114’-0” x 24’-9”. This is installed over the Grand Ballroom Patio area. It includes a rigid frame buildout from the building at the left side to meet the back of the Corradi unit, extending to the far outside of the patio. The project also includes 12 Titan Screen drop down screens around the perimeter of the front and sides.

This resort hotel is always very busy, so the project had to be installed within a 10 day window. This was done in phases and quickly installed around events. Now the ballroom patio area is functional with an additional large area that is good during sunshine, rain or beautiful moonlit nights. They now have total flexibility. There are no more problems with the storage of tents and the manpower needed to assemble and disassemble them. The ballroom retractable canopies for The Ritz Carlton are attractive and distinctive; allowing all sorts of décor for weddings and events throughout the year.

Village of Merrick Park

Escalator & Walkways Canopies

Coral Gables, Florida

 

The goal of this project was to create a trendy and functional design to match the look and feel of the popular commercial shopping district of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, FL.

Our team created matching escalator and walkway canopies that bring a sense of continuity throughout the outdoor plaza. This dynamic, arched design offers shade and protection from rain so customers can walk from one end of the center to the other, visiting their favorite stores with comfort and ease.

Woody’s West End Tavern

Commercial Restaurant Canopy

Miami Springs, Florida

 

This is a project designed for an outdoor terrace of a local tavern and casual eating establishment. The original building has been around since 1948. It was a small grocery and then became Woody’s Tavern in the 1950’s – a local watering hole. In 2010, the property was acquired by another owner and now named Woody’s Westend Tavern. The client has been renovating the property and now wanted to cover the space with canopies instead of just using umbrellas. He had visited a restaurant where our firm had designed an outdoor canopy for a restaurant. He liked the design and wanted a series of the canopies for his space. The owner wanted his patrons to be able to enjoy the outdoors under a shaded canopy that keeps their clients cool and protected from inclement weather. He also wanted to be able to use the space for various events throughout the year. Instead of just one basic canopy structure; the canopy is made up of (3) arched canopies. The client didn’t want posts, so he had his contractor install beams that would be used for the support of the framework. The design of the canopy was inspired by the owner seeing one of our other canopy installations and modifying the design for his establishment. This project works well with the outdoor surfing theme of the tavern. The 3 canopies look like waves overhead. The canopies harmonize all of the surrounding elements and create an outdoor space that is so versatile. It can be used for relaxing venues or great for dining and watching exciting sporting events!

Innovative construction methods were used to measure, design and fabricate the canopy so that installation would be able to be quickly accomplished. The canopy is designed to accommodate lights, ceiling fans and drop down curtains or screens in the future in the event of inclement weather.

The customer is very happy with the results of the project. The canopies provide shade and sun protection for all of their guests all year around. The owner and employees say that it is wonderful! Now patrons can sit outside and enjoy themselves anytime of the year. It is the perfect place to hold any type of gathering such as local community events, parties and sporting events. The atmosphere invites you to come in and enjoy the moment and be our guest! The Mayor of the community loves the addition of the canopy. People drive by and take photos. These new canopies create a wonderful oasis to enjoy oneself with friends and locals at Woody’s Westend Tavern; while getting great food and drink in the community.
